Getting ready<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Before you start<\/strong> your source to target mapping process, you need to cover the following aspects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Understanding of the domain, <\/strong>naming and processes in the old and new system. A good idea is to create a template of how the mapping is going to look like.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Understanding of the structure<\/strong> of the source and target database\/system. A great help will be ERD diagrams, database schema, system access and database access.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determining <strong>whether all data from the source system should be included<\/strong> in the target system, or maybe only data the target system needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking <strong>how many source systems<\/strong> are there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking whether <strong>the nomenclature<\/strong> in the old and new systems is the same or different.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking <strong>whether data between the systems duplicates,<\/strong> complements each other, or is independent of each other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.future-processing.com\/blog\/data-transformation\/\">data transformation<\/a> rules<\/strong> or logic that needs to be applied.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Establishing what mapping objects you have <\/strong>and making sure that for each object there must be a separate sheet in Excel or a separate file. Other aspects to consider<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When working on source to target mapping it is also important to remember about the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Data filtering,<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transformation: <\/strong>if you have, for example, product categories, it is necessary to mark which ones from the source correspond to those from the target,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data types,<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The number of characters in the fields<\/strong> \u2013 it\u2019s fine if the new system has a field length greater than the old one. Much worse is the scenario in which the field length in the new system equals, for example, 8, and in the old system 16.
