ESG: technology, social impact and much more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The environmental criteria<\/strong> pertain to a company\u2019s impact on the planet and may include the use of energy, disposal of hazardous waste, treatment of animals, and management of toxic emissions, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The social criteria<\/strong> consider how an organisation manages its business relationships with its customers, employees or suppliers, and may include working conditions, wages, and communication aspects, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governance criteria <\/strong>revolve around how a company is managed and examine, for example, style of leadership, shareholder rights, accounting methods, or transparency and diversity issues, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ESG is growing in importance as an integral part of the corporate screening process, especially among investors of younger generations, not only in terms of ethical concerns but also risk management<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ESG may also help investors avoid cooperating with organisations whose activities may cause, for example, a drastic drop in their stock prices (see: Deepwater Horizon oil spill).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No wonder sustainability and environmental factors are becoming key considerations<\/strong> in an organisation\u2019s digital transformation<\/a>, as shown in the diagram below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The above explains why ESG is important from an investor\u2019s perspective, but what benefits do ESG practices bring to the organisation itself? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why will ESG be vitally important for companies in the future?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, implementing a consistent ESG framework builds a positive corporate image<\/strong> and attracts modern investors, fund managers, top talents in the market, and customers who are no longer willing to support companies that don\u2019t incorporate ESG within their strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, it increases employee satisfaction,<\/strong> making your team more engaged in what they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirdly, ESG also holds companies accountable <\/strong>for their promises and helps them maintain reliability in front of their stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of this helps create value for businesses<\/strong> \u2013 but only when done right. Some companies feel so much pressure that they develop false ESG frameworks in order to persuade clients and investors that they are environmentally friendly when, in reality, they\u2019re not (because, for example, they don\u2019t want to bear any additional costs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is called greenwashing<\/strong>, and it is a common pitfall that can do more harm than good, and should be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
